Description
Girl and her Kitty is a painting in memory of my mother, who grew up on a ranch in the late 1920s and 1930s. She loved her cats, her main playmates on the ranch. She would play house with them and have tea parties.
In a nostalgic setting, a little girl plays with her pet kitty in the front of an old barn shed. The antique, old-fashioned, hand-operated water pump for the ranch house is in the background.
Ranch is the term common in the Western United States for an area of land primarily used for the practice of ranching, or raising grazing livestock, like cattle, for meat. A ranch may also include arable or irrigated land used for raising farming hay and feed grain crops and orchards.
Human powered water pumps have seen wide use in many countries around the world. The pumps operate on a piston or diaphragm with a check valve to regulate entry and exit of the water. Many of these hand pumps used positive displacement via reciprocating pistons. Direct action hand pumps like the one in the painting have a pumping rod that is moved up and down by the person pumping to release the water. Easy to install and keep operational, direct action hand pumps are limited to the column of water a person can lift up, around 15 cm.

Creating portals of light, love, joy, beauty, compassion, hope and gratitude is my lifelong passion and gift for the earth, hence the name of my art business, For the Earth. My mother painted in oils when I was young and encouraged my own drawing, painting and handcrafting in all forms. My father, the photographer, gave me my first camera at age 8. As a result of these loving influences, I am a lifelong student of both mediums. I am grateful to my wonderful Pacific NW painter teachers, Stan Capon and Edi Olson, for training my eye and technique. I hope you will enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed its creation.
