Description
Juicy Tomatoes was photographed in the heart of summer, just after harvesting the daily tomato crop. They looked so jewel-like, I had to photograph them.
The lovely tomato is actually a member of the berry family, believed to have its origin in South America. Indeed, the origin of the word is from the Aztec tomatl, who used it as a food. These early versions of tomato were small, more berry-like, and similar to the cherry tomatoes of today. Most of these early versions were yellow; unlike the red tomatoes we are more familiar with today. Early Europeans thought that this member of the nightshade family was equally as deadly. The fruit is harmless, of course; however the leaves are actually poisonous. The Spanish conquistador, Cortez, may have brought the first tomato plant to Europe, although Christopher Columbus may have brought it even earlier. The tomato showed up in cookbook recipes in Italy in 1692.
Tomato plants are often like vines in character, sprawling on the ground if their weak stems are unsupported. Growing up to 10 feet in height, the tomato plant is usually grown outdoors as an annual by both home and commercial gardeners. The America, Alexander Livingston was the first to develop different, stable plants from the wild tomato in the late 1800s. As the tomato came to reproduce reliably and became fleshier and larger, he was able to create a business around tomato culture, creating seventeen different varieties. Tomatoes have now become one of the most popular garden fruits in the US and are now grown in worldwide.

Creating portals of light, love, joy, beauty, compassion, hope and gratitude is my lifelong passion and gift for the earth, hence the name of my art business, For the Earth. My mother painted in oils when I was young and encouraged my own drawing, painting and handcrafting in all forms. My father, the photographer, gave me my first camera at age 8. As a result of these loving influences, I am a lifelong student of both mediums. I am grateful to my wonderful Pacific NW painter teachers, Stan Capon and Edi Olson, for training my eye and technique. I hope you will enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed its creation.
