Description
The Grand Canyon Pine photograph was taken from the South Rim Trail in September between fall rainstorms. This wonderful area is part of the Grand Canyon National Park. The canyon is 277 miles long and an average of 10 miles in width and almost one mile deep. It is considered on of the wonders of the world. It has been a national park since 1919.
The rocks of the canyon walls show a record of the Paleozoic Era, 541 to 252 million years ago. At the bottom of the canyon are stones dating from the Precambrian Era, almost 2 billion years ago. It is estimated that 70 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau was lifted when the Pacific tectonic plate crashed into it and then went under the North American plate pushing up the Rocky Mountains. The Grand Canyon began to appear 5 to 6 million years ago when snowmelt waters from the Rocky Mountains cut its way through and linked shorter canyon segments. The forming Colorado River eventually reached the Gulf of California and is credited with the carving of the canyon over the millennia.
