Description
These colorful red Chinese lanterns in San Francisco’s Chinatown reminded me of hot air balloons rising into the blue sky. The cheerful bright colors everywhere in Chinatown are guaranteed to catch the eye.
San Francisco’s has four recognizable Chinatowns within the city. The oldest known Chinatown in North America established in 1848 and has the largest Chinese population outside of Asia. The Dragon Gate entrance on Grant leads to the area that caters primarily to tourists. The other main street, Stockton Street, offers a more authentic Chinese style and feeling, with mixed use buildings with shops on the street level and residential living quarters in the upper stories of the buildings. A major tourist attraction, Chinatowns are a microcosm of the Asian cultural world, complete with herbal shops, fish markets, restaurants, stores, temples, pagoda roofs and hospitals, parks and post offices.
The Chinatown area was completely leveled in the 1906 earthquake, as was most of the city of San Francisco. Devastating as it was to the wooden tenements there, the rebuilding opened the area to legitimate Chinese merchants and a police force that ended prostitution and drugs supporting the tongs. Today, Chinatown San Francisco is a popular and safe tourist destination.

Creating portals of light, love, joy, beauty, compassion, hope and gratitude is my lifelong passion and gift for the earth, hence the name of my art business, For the Earth. My mother painted in oils when I was young and encouraged my own drawing, painting and handcrafting in all forms. My father, the photographer, gave me my first camera at age 8. As a result of these loving influences, I am a lifelong student of both mediums. I am grateful to my wonderful Pacific NW painter teachers, Stan Capon and Edi Olson, for training my eye and technique. I hope you will enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed its creation.
