Description
Steel Drum Street Musicians
Steel drums are thought to have originated in Trinidad and Tobago, where the orchestra at Carnival played music on frying pans, dustbin lids and oil drums. After 1947, steel drums were made from actual 55 gallon steel drums, which were first used for storing oil and similar substances. Steel drums are sometimes called steel pans and the musicians are known as pannists. The steel drum or steel pan is considered a part of the instrument group known as idiophone. Technically, though the steel pan is considered a percussion instrument, it is not actually a drum, but a membranophone. The pansticks have rubber tips and the musician may use two in each hand. The steel pan instrument is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. Steel bands at Carnival in Trinidad are known for re- inventing calypsos music every year. A steel bands repertoire can span a broad range of music, from Latin and Jazz Fusion, to film music, popular tunes and classical. A steel band was used in the Broadway musical The House of Flowers and in the 1967 pop song Carrie Anne by the group, The Hollies.

Creating portals of light, love, joy, beauty, compassion, hope and gratitude is my lifelong passion and gift for the earth, hence the name of my art business, For the Earth. My mother painted in oils when I was young and encouraged my own drawing, painting and handcrafting in all forms. My father, the photographer, gave me my first camera at age 8. As a result of these loving influences, I am a lifelong student of both mediums. I am grateful to my wonderful Pacific NW painter teachers, Stan Capon and Edi Olson, for training my eye and technique. I hope you will enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed its creation.
