Description
The love and trust between a young girl and her horse is legendary. One of the ways they play together is in the sport of barrel racing. Lets Barrel Race is an oil painting that demonstrates that love and trust as the young girl urges her horse towards the next barrel.
Barrel racing as a rodeo event, was originally developed around 1948 in Texas for women to show their skill, while men roped steers and rode bulls and bucking broncos. These days, women can compete in other rodeo events as well. In barrel racing in particular, boys and girls can compete at the junior levels and, although a few men compete at the higher levels, barrel racing remains an event dominated by women.
The athletic abilities of both the horse and the rider are challenged riding full out and maneuvering around three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern. The fastest race times come from a horse with speed, strength and agility, able to hug the barrels in the turn and follow the direction of an athletic rider, able to hug the horse and communicate clearly in the maneuvers.

Creating portals of light, love, joy, beauty, compassion, hope and gratitude is my lifelong passion and gift for the earth, hence the name of my art business, For the Earth. My mother painted in oils when I was young and encouraged my own drawing, painting and handcrafting in all forms. My father, the photographer, gave me my first camera at age 8. As a result of these loving influences, I am a lifelong student of both mediums. I am grateful to my wonderful Pacific NW painter teachers, Stan Capon and Edi Olson, for training my eye and technique. I hope you will enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed its creation.
