Description
A grandfather and a young child are walking together near an old red barn.
Grandparents are most often associated with love and affection for their children’s children and for providing recognition, acceptance, strength, and guidance and support. Many grandparents have assumed responsibility for child care and support throughout history.
Terms of affection, Grandparent, Grandpa, Gramps, Gran, Grandpap, Granddaddy, Pop, Pappa, and Nannan are some of the most common variations in naming a grandfather in the United States, Canada, and Australia. When there are two living sets of grandparents, some families add the first name of the grandparent, Grandpa George.
The origin of the term, grand, dates to the 13th century, the Anglo-French graund. In the United States, here is a National Grandparents Day, proclaimed in 1977 to honor grandparents.
Barns, like this one were primarily framed with timber board siding, placed vertically. Red is a traditional color for barn buildings in the West. There are several reasons for the choice of this color. The red paint is ferric oxide. Besides being inexpensive and readily available, ferric oxide acts as a wood preservative. In these older style barns, the upper area, hayloft, was a storage place for hay bales. A large door could be opened at the top end of the barn so that bales could be hoisted into the loft. Lower areas were for storage of farm equipment and shelter for farm animals.
Grandpa & Me is an original oil painting, from an original photograph. The location is in Skagit County in the state of Washington, USA.

Creating portals of light, love, joy, beauty, compassion, hope and gratitude is my lifelong passion and gift for the earth, hence the name of my art business, For the Earth. My mother painted in oils when I was young and encouraged my own drawing, painting and handcrafting in all forms. My father, the photographer, gave me my first camera at age 8. As a result of these loving influences, I am a lifelong student of both mediums. I am grateful to my wonderful Pacific NW painter teachers, Stan Capon and Edi Olson, for training my eye and technique. I hope you will enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed its creation.
